TIP 40: Clinical Guidelines for the use of Buprenorphine in the Treatment of Opioid Addiction

Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders, provided as a service of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). CSAT’s Office of Evaluation, Scientific Analysis and Synthesis draws on the experience and knowledge of clinical, research, and administrative experts to produce the TIPs.

The TIP 40 is specifically about the use of buprenoprphine in the treatment of opioid addiction. This publication explains buprenorphine pharmacology and treatment use and is the #1 downloaded item from this site.

This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP), Substance Abuse: Clinical Issues in Intensive Outpatient Treatment, addresses the practical needs of treatment providers as they design and implement IOT programs. The TIP provides specific information on the principles of intensive outpatient treatment; services and treatment models; modifications for distinct population groups; culturally competent treatment; screening and patient placement criteria; counseling methods and techniques, including involvement of families; and the continuum of care. TIP 42: Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders
This TIP identifies key elements of programming for co-occurring disorders in substance abuse treatment agencies.
